Aftercare
Sinus perforation
You have just undergone a surgical procedure in which one or more molars from the upper jaw have been removed. During this procedure, a connection was created between the maxillary sinus and the oral cavity. This connection has been surgically closed. In most cases, such a connection heals within 2 weeks.
Here are some instructions and advice for home care to ensure the healing of this "open connection" proceeds as smoothly as possible:
-
After Closing the Gum Over the Tooth Socket:
You may need to bite on a piece of gauze for 30 minutes to stop the bleeding from the wound. Before removing the gauze, moisten it with a little water to prevent it from sticking to the sutures and potentially reopening the wound.
-
"No-Blowing" Rule for 10–14 Days:
Avoid all pressure on the maxillary sinus to allow the wound to heal calmly and effectively. This includes:-
Do not blow your nose.
-
Sneeze with your mouth open.
-
Avoid playing wind instruments.
-
-
For 1–2 weeks, be careful when brushing near the wound to avoid reopening it.
-
To keep the sinus clean and ventilated, inhale steam by leaning over a bowl of boiled water and gently breathing in the vapor. Additionally, use a disinfecting mouthwash to rinse the wound starting the day after the procedure.
-
The sutures used are dissolvable and will naturally disappear within 2–4 weeks, depending on the type of suture material used.
-
You may need to return for a wound check after the procedure. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled for you immediately after your treatment.
What to do in case of problems?
